How To Get Rainbow Hair
Working every single colour of the rainbow sound like the stuff hairspo dreams are made of? Well, we’re right there with you - because why have one shade when you can have almost endless colour.
So here’s everything you need to know about getting that rainbow hair trend - finally!
The rainbow trend is big, bright and bold and it’s all about getting that statement colour. So for the most vibrant hues you’re going to need to start with a very light blonde base tone. If you want to use our Ultra Brights Silver Steel, Sea Mermaid, Electric Blue or Turquoise Temptation, you need to have bleached hair, as opposed to natural blonde. If your hair is already a light bleached blonde (but not white blonde),then you can go straight to colouring, if not, keep reading.
Depending on your natural colour, you should pre-lighten your locks using our Intense Lightener range to lift your hair to that cool blonde base. If you’ve already got colour on your hair or would just like some reassurances about lightening at home, get in touch with our Advisory Service on Freephone 0800 328 9214.
Reach for the Rainbow
So now that your tresses are at the right base tone, it’s time for the colour! Rainbow hair is super versatile and completely customisable, so whether you’re going for a seven tone pastel number or a vivid three tone style, rainbow hair’s all about experimenting. We’ve opted for some quiet rebellion and gone for the hidden rainbow look, using our Ultra Brights range to create a vibrant but discreet ‘do. You’ll need to get at least 1 pack per shade you want to use (you may need 2 if you’re after a full head and/or have long/thick hair). Don’t worry though, any leftover Ultra Brights Colour Cream can be safely stored and re-used when you’re ready for your next application - just make sure the lid is screwed back on tightly after each use. You can also check out our Ultra Brights Rainbow Blends Aqua Collection or Sunburst Collection - where you’ll find a selection of your favourite shades in 1 pack!
You’ll need to start with damp and clean hair, armed with a pair of gloves provided in-pack and an old towel to prevent clothing stains. Also, applying some petroleum jelly to your hairline will act as a barrier to help combat skin staining.
We’ve chosen to use Electric Blue, Purple Punk, Pillar Box Red and Shocking Pink for the rainbow look, but this is totally down to you. You can embrace your inner artist and mix these colours together for a custom tone, or go for a subtle pastel look by combining the colours with the in-pack conditioner or our new LIVE Pastel It. Once you’ve decided on your look, have a read through the Instruction Leaflet and don’t forget to perform a strand test as well.
First up, divide your hair into sections to make the whole process super-manageable - for hidden rainbow hair make sure the top layer of hair is up and well clear of any colour!
Now get applying your desired colour to each section (a tint brush is useful here if you want clearly defined colour sections). Don’t forget to make sure you wash the brush and gloves after you’re done with each shade to avoid any colour mix-up.
Now wait for around twenty to thirty minutes to allow the colours to fully develop. If you’re creating a hidden rainbow, remember to keep the top section of your hair pinned out of the way and rinse the coloured, underneath part of your hair until the water is running clear. Finish with the conditioner. During rinsing, the colours may run together a little - this is perfectly fine and will help to make the sections look more blended.
Maintain the Rainbow
To keep that rainbow hair looking fresh as ever, make sure you don’t over-wash your hair, and only use shampoos and conditioners specifically designed to be used on coloured hair such as our Color Expert Colour Sealer Conditioner.
The semi-permanent Ultra Brights are perfect to use for topping up your colour and keeping it fresh - to learn how to do this easily and make the most of any remaining Colour Cream.
If you’ve pre-lightened and your roots start to appear, make sure you’re only re-lightening the natural root hair - no need to do the entire head of hair!
And there you have it, you’ve got that rainbow trend perfected. Pair with a plait when you want to showcase your colour, or wear down when your colour needs to stay incognito. And let’s not forget those hair selfies, tag with #LIVEColour for the chance to get that rainbow featured on our Insta feed!
